Honor Council

The IAJHSC Honor Council Award gives special recognition to those schools that have designed exemplary programs for  their junior high/middle school Student Councils. “Exemplary” is defined as participating in IAJHSC programs and  sponsoring activities in each of the areas listed below. Please see the description of this award in the IAJHSC Advisor’s  Resource File on the website for examples of activities designed to meet the goals in the specific areas of the Honor Council  Program.

To be eligible for this award, schools must have a minimum of six (6) points in the IAJHSC participation category and must  complete three (3) projects in each of the other categories listed on the application. If your council has completed more  than the required number of projects in each category, it would be appropriate to list those as well just in case other listed  activities or projects are not accepted. The last page of the application provides space for additional projects to be listed.  All applications will be carefully screened.

This application should be completed based on participation in IAJHSC programs and completion of activities by your  Student Council from State Convention 2023 to State Convention 2022. In addition, to be eligible for this award,  schools must submit a student written article for the IAJHSC website by March 11, 2022. A copy of the confirmation  email showing receipt of the student-written article must be included with this application.

2024 Bruce Small Legacy Award Recipient

Bruce A. Small

Bruce A. Small began his service as a student council advisor in 1974 at Germantown Hills Grade School in Metamora and then moved to Galena Middle School and continued to be an advisor.   In 1977 he expanded his involvement by joining the IAJHSC board.  In his time on the board from 1977-2023, he served as the Northwest Adult Director, the convention coordinator, and in 2002, he became the Executive Director of the organization.  He deepened his involvement in student council by attending conferences through the National Association of Workshop Directors and eventually with his membership in the National Association of State Student Council Executive Directors.  He was granted lifetime membership in that organization this past December.  Anyone in the organization in his 49 years of devoted service to the IAJHSC would have a story of how Bruce impacted their involvement with student council.  He has been the face of the organization for the last 21 years and has clearly left a legacy.
